LA and OC water hardness varies dramatically by district — some neighborhoods see 5-10 grains per gallon (moderately hard), others (especially older parts of LA County) see 15-25 GPG (very hard). Hard water leaves scale on fixtures, shortens water-heater life, and makes soaps less effective. We test your specific water — both for hardness and for any chlorine, chloramines, or other compounds — and recommend softening, conditioning, or filtration based on the actual chemistry, not a guess.
Filter media replacement intervals depend on the filter type, water quality, and usage volume. Sediment filters: 3-6 months. Carbon filters (chlorine/taste/odor): 6-12 months. Whole-house multi-stage systems: 6-24 months per stage. Softener resin: 8-15 years before exchange. Reverse osmosis membranes: 2-5 years. We document your install with a maintenance schedule and can set up automatic reminders if you want.
Older reverse-osmosis units wasted 4-5 gallons for every 1 gallon of purified water; modern high-efficiency RO systems run 1:1 or better, and tankless RO units are now mainstream. The waste-water ratio depends on the membrane quality, the inlet pressure, and the system design. We size and select RO systems for efficiency and capacity — for a typical family of 4 a properly-sized RO produces about 50 gallons/day of pure water with minimal waste.
Yes — undersized whole-house filters create a noticeable pressure drop at peak demand (multiple showers + dishwasher + laundry running). We size filtration for peak flow, not just average flow, using the home's fixture count. For most single-family homes that means a 10x4.5" jumbo housing or larger. Smaller filters work fine for low-demand homes but create flow restrictions in larger households or homes with 2-3 bathrooms running simultaneously.
